Traveling Northbound, I reached the Marlborough region and went for some wine tasting at Hunter’s Vineyard. At this time of year in autumn the vineyard is so colourful with its spectacular lush fall foliage! (which I’m a sucker for if you haven’t already noticed). New Zealand is most known for their white wines, in particular Sauvignon Blanc. Red wines are really popular in countries with much dryer and hotter weather, such as Australia or Africa. The one red wine that New Zealand can pull off really well though is Pinot Noir.
After several tastings and deciding that the Sauvignon Blanc was my favourite (when usually red winds are) I explored the vineyard’s gardens. Eventually I had to ask where the washrooms were and in response received puzzled looks. Apparently “washroom” or “bathroom” is a little too ambiguous. I caught on that asking for the “toilet” in NZ is the way to go. Just straight up toilet. Makes sense I suppose, it is what I’m literally looking for.
Soon after I made it to Picton, the town where you catch the ferry to travel to Wellington in the North island and vice versa. I did a very vigorous and steep hilltop climb. Once at the top I had an amazing view of the town and the harbour. The recent rain made the trees, plants and flowers really saturated in colour and vibrant. That night’s hostel was “The Villa.” It’s cheery and bright and every night at 8 pm they serve free ice cream and apple crumble.
